I myself have trained all different types of formats. Whether it be a fully committed seven day a week workout regimen, or a minimalistic approach, two days a week training all out. It seems to me that a three day a week workout regimen with focused exercises is the most effective for individuals in their 20's 30's 40's and 50's.
