These two drills will help martial artists learn proper martial arts kicking foot position, which includes how to blade the foot. This foot position drill is enhanced by the resistance provided by Kbands. The Kbands will help the martial artist achieve total muscle activation, resulting in muscle memory and more powerful kicks.

 

 

How To Kick Properly | Martial Arts Kicking Foot Position: Setup

To set up the two foot position drills, martial artists will need a set of Kbands, an area to perform the martial arts foot position drill, and a coach or partner to observe form and technique. Martial artists will attach the Kbands just above the knees and get into the starting position. Martial artists will lay on their side and extend their leg up.

As martial artists go through these foot position drills, it is important their extended foot is in proper martial arts kicking foot position. During the kicking drills martial artists will keep the heel pointed up in the air, toes pointed down, and foot pulled back. This martial arts kicking foot position is known as blading the foot.

To begin the first martial arts foot position drill, lying on their side, martial artists will assume a good starting position. With leg fully extended martial artists will perform leg raises. Be sure to keep the foot bladed and do not let the legs touch at the bottom. Keep the top leg airborne during the entire exercise.

Martial artists will perform 2 sets of 10 resisted repetitions from each leg. Following the 2 resisted sets of the foot position drill, the martial artist will remove the Kbands and perform 10 un-resisted repetitions with each leg. During the unresisted repetitions of the martial arts kicking foot position drill martial artists will achieve total muscle activation, helping to produce a stringer and more explosive kick.

Be sure martial artists are executing proper form during the un-resisted sets as legs will feel lighter with the Kbands removed from the foot position drill.

The second martial arts kicking foot position drill begins in the same position as the previous martial arts kicking foot position drill. While on their side martial artists will extend their leg in a turning kick fashion, bring the leg back, kick it out, and hold. Be sure to keep good form during the martial arts kicking foot position drill. Keep the leg airborne throughout the entire exercise and keep the foot bladed. 

This foot position drill will be performed for 2 sets of 10 resisted repetitions with each leg. Following the resisted repetitions, martial artists will remove the Kbands and perform 1 set of 10 unresisted repetitions with each leg.
